Worship Service

MEDITATION:       “Memorial Day Tribute”

Lord, help me to relax.

Take from me the tension that makes people impossible.

Take from me the fears that do not allow me to venture.

Take from me the worries that blind my sight.

Take from me the distress that hides your joy.

Help me to know that I am with you, that I am in your care,

that I am in your love, that you and I are one.

Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of remembrance.

We remember fallen soldiers, and the sacrifice they made for the sake of others.

Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of thanksgiving.

We thank God for brave men and women that have given their lives so that we may worship without fear.

Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of silence; for a moment is the least we can do for those that gave their eternity.

Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of praise.

We thank God for the sacrifice Jesus Christ made by his death to forgive our sins and the blessings we receive through our faith in him.

HYMN: God of Our Fathers:

Psalm 27

1The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

2When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh— my adversaries and foes— they shall stumble and fall.

3Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.

4One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.

5For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock.

6Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

7Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!

8“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, Lord, do I seek.

9Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation!

10If my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up.

11Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.

12Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence.

13I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

14Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

Our holy and gracious God, help us to remember. Help us to remember the sacrifices bravely made in which one has given life for another and for all. Help us to remember those that stand in the breach where there is trouble and in which conflict threatens to undo your good creation. Help us to remember that we look for the day when every sword will be replaced by a plow, that all may be fed and live in your peace. Forgive us every sin that makes for division and for war, and bring us all into your kingdom on earth as in heaven. This we pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen

Jesus comes to us as the Prince of Peace and proclaims that the Kingdom of God is near. In Christ God reminds us of the power of love and forgiveness. We are forgiven and called to keep working for reconciliation and peace in our world. Thanks be to God, our sins are forgiven.

In Honor of the Fallen:

God, we come with Taps in our hearts remembering those who have died for others, soldiers, sailors, air corps, in this country and others, remembering those who risk life for others, coast guard, firefighter, law enforcement, both near and far away, remembering those who go forth in emergency response, disaster relief, and aid to victims of war, remembering those who witness for justice
in the face of opposition, and remembering our own losses that we may receive your comfort.

Lord, help us respect each other’s lives and safety in this time of viral threat. Guide us to serve others who are lonely or afraid. Bless us with your reassuring presence and with your peace, for we pray through Christ, who taught us to pray…

Our Father, which art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name.  Thy Kingdom come.

Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Blest Be the Tie That Binds:

Please consider mailing your offering to the church.  Send offerings to Cherry Lane UMC P.O. Box 525, Tannersville, PA 18372.

For the blessings of this and all our days, we thank you, gracious God. Accept, we pray, not just our tithes and offerings, but also our lives freely offered in gratitude for all you have done for us. Use us and our gifts to your glory and to help others know you. Amen.

John 15:9-17

9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.
